Nursing: Reference Sources

Reference Books

Why choose a reference book?

reference

Reference sources (encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases) give concise introductions to topics.  Use them to:

  • explore topics for research;
  • get background information;
  • explain unfamiliar ideas.

Reference sources are available at the College Library in both print and electronic formats

Should I use Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is great to use first when you know nothing about a topic.  It may give you keywords to use in searches, references for additional resources, and links to Internet sources.

It should only be used at the very beginning of your research to become familiar with the subject!

Electronic sources for reference books

You can search EBSCO's eBook collection (these books are also in the library catalog) and ebrary for nursing reference books.  It's helpful to use terms like

   dictionaries

   manulas

   handbooks

   guides

as SUBJECTS in an advanced search to restrict your search results to reference material.  The books below, for example, were retrieved by searching "nursing" as a subject and then one of the terms listed above, also as a subject.
