The Mathematics Departmet at Bethel expects students to use LaTeX to write their documents and BibTeX to format their bibliographies. The formatting of references within the document is performed by LaTeX.
Below are some resources that students can use. The sample paper by Ed Scheinerman includes a .zip archive that contains paper.tex (the source document), paper.pdf (the printable version), paper.bib (the bibtex source file). There's also a Makefile there (a unix utility used for invoking the correct programs on a unix system). I'm pretty sure that if one opens the files in TexMaker that it will build correctly.
