Guide for Faculty & Staff: Library Reserves

Here's the place to start learning about how the College Library can help you and your students.

Reserve Basics

Library Reserve is located on the main level of the library right inside the front door.  Reserve materials are arranged by class name, and most students simply ask for them that way.

You can place material on Reserve by

  • Sending a list via email to Renae Stucky
  • Pulling library materials off the shelf and bringing them to Circulation Desk staff or Renae
  • Bringing in your own personal material
  • Please provide the following information:
    • Name of class
    • Your name
    • Type of Reserve*
      • 2 hour/library use only (closed)
      • 2 hour/overnight (may be taken out of the library at 10 PM and returned no later than 9 AM the next morning
      • 4 hour/overnight
      • 1 day
      • 2 day
      • 1 week

Please allow at least 24 hours for processing reserve materials.  If you need items on reserve sooner, make sure they are delivered to the library before 2 PM.  Reserve items are not processed over the weekend.

*When determining what type of reserve is most appropriate, note circulation guidelines regarding 2 hour open and closed reserve (this statement is on the orange band typically placed on reserve books):

"Open Reserve" materials checked out overnight must be returned to the library by 8:30 AM the next morning. Do not check out Open Reserve materials before 10 PM if you want to keep them overnight.

Closed Reserve items are never to leave the library.

Fees of at least $10 may be applied as soon as material is overdue.

Electronic Reserves

We can place materials on library reserve through our catalog using links from database providers, although most instructors prefer to put links/full text on course pages using Moodle.

Reserve Materials

Reserve materials are usually required or recommended readings for specific classes.

Reserve items are located behind the circulation desk on the main level of the library.

They are shelved alphabetically by the name of the class.

You can also search the library catalog by your instructor's name, academic department, or the name of the class to find out what is on reserve.

Check the orange band or file folder label on reserve items to find out what kind of reserve applies. Please adhere to the circulation period on the band; other students in your class will want to use the same material. Types of reserve include:

2 hour/library use only: Material is not to leave the library at any time.

2 hour/overnight:  Material must be used in the library until 2 hours before closing (that is usually 10 PM).  At that point, the material may be taken out of the building.  However, it needs to be returned the next morning by 8 AM

2 day

1 week

For clarification, the orange band states:

"Open Reserve" materials checked out overnight must be returned to the library by 8:30 AM the next morning. Do not check out Open Reserve materials before 10 PM if you want to keep them overnight.

Closed Reserve items are never to leave the library.

Fees of at least $10 may be applied as soon as material as overdue.

Overdue reserve materials incur lost/replacement fees very quickly.  In-library and overnight materials incur fees the morning after the material is due.

Reserve Guidelines (the fine print)

  • We discourage the use of interlibrary loan for reserve.  The United States ILL Code states:  "Because returnable materials borrowed via interlibrary loan are traditionally intended for individual use of a defined duration, the requesting library should communicate with the supplying library in advance if the material is needed for other uses, such as course reserves, classroom or other group viewing of audiovisual material, or for an extended loan period, especially of a textbook."  Moreover, you will be held liable if ILL reserve material you have requested disappears.

  • The library does not purchase textbooks to place on reserve.

  • Copyright law suggests that placing a maximum of 2-3 PAPER copies of an article on reserve is allowable under fair use.  The library staff assumes that any article you bring to the library has appropriate copyright permissions.
